Dead power supply? Fried main board?

Here’s the short version: Yesterday I got an error code 8 on my SV08 (no other messages, just an 8). I found that the error was occurring when the hot end tried to heat up. The temp never changed; it just sat there for a little bit and then went into the error state. I’ll describe my next steps but the issue is now that I have no power on the printer.

I have a Micro-Swiss hot end that was working fine. Two weeks ago I got an error code 8 but it was the Exception In Fan version. Following the Wiki instructions, I swapped the Fan1 and Fan2 leads on the adapter board and found that Fan2’s port wasn’t working (both fans were working). I wasn’t shocked because I previously caused a short (weeks ago) when trying to scrape off a filament blob with the power on because I’m an idiot. I ordered an adapter board and replaced it last week.

Everything was working well until the new issue arose with the 8 error code and the nozzle not heating up. I checked and all the fans were working. I replaced the Micro-Swiss with the stock hot end (with the power off and the cord removed because I’m not always an idiot) to see if it was a problem with the Micro-Swiss. I get no response from the printer when I flip the switch. The cord is seated properly and I tried it in different power outlets as well.

Where do I go from here? Is it the power supply? A fried main board? I will take off the panel tomorrow and look for loose wires but if I am going to have to order parts I want to get on that as quickly as I can.

Thanks!

At the beginning of your post I was thinking bad thermistor…
But after you switched hotends you have no power at all.
Seems like there must be a short somewhere.
Problem is, if it;s not the baby board, it’ could be in the harness.

Try a different outlet in your house…run an extension cord.
I assume you looked to see if the motherboard lights come on when you flip the power on…

I took off the electronics panel this morning, used a different power outlet, and there are blinking blue lights on the main board. None of the fans, the LED light, or the LCD display turn on.

I appreciate any and all input but without additional suggestions I will test the power supply tonight (I admit that I am idiot but I am careful with power supplies!) and if it checks out I will get a replacement wiring harness. I won’t worry yet about what happens if none of these things fix it!

I am curious about the hotend swap…if your willing before you start testing other things…
re-install the Micro-Swiss and see if power is restored.

I will do that and let you know the results!

The good news is that I have power again! I swapped the Micro-Swiss back in the printer powered up fine. I attempted to raise the the hotend temp a modest amount (from 20c to 50c) but the original problem occurred again…no change in temp and then a “printer is shutdown” error.
Question, just to make sure I didn’t get mixed up: The fan that is attached to the heatsink on the hotend is Fan1 on the PCB and the fan at the lower rear (parts fan) is Fan2 on the PCB. Correct?

I don’t own a SV08, but I found this.

It’s still possible it could be a thermistor issue on the Micro-Swiss.

I’ll try using a generic printer.cfg and macro.cfg to be sure there isn’t something dorked up in those but if it’s still happening afterward I will get a replacement heater core for the Micro-Swiss (includes thermistor).

It does seem like you might have fried the Sovol hotend when you had your short.

I hot glued all connectors and loaded unmodified config files but still got the same error. I ordered a new heater core so when that arrives I’ll start troubleshooting again. Thanks for the help, Lion!

Quick version: It was a bad thermistor.
More torturous version: I ordered a replacement heater core (with thermistor) from Microswiss. While removing the old one in anticipation of the new one, a retaining screw sheared off flush with the heatsink. Not wanting to wait any longer to print I ordered a replacement hotend from Amazon. I decided that I should let Microswiss know about the screw problem and they very graciously offered to replace the heatsink and screws. As of today, I have a new hotend (which is working well), multiple rubber boots (the original tore so I got replacements), 7 nozzles, a new heater core/thermistor, and a new heatsink that is in transit. I’m good to go now!

Meanwhile, my SLA printer broke. But that’s OK because it gave me an excuse to buy a new one. Hopefully I can get some quality printing time in with the SV08 before something else happens!
