So…
I’ve been having a few issues printing and tried quite a few things with no real benefit.
Initially, I was printing an MIB Neuralyzer (for a fancy-dress party in a month or so) which appeared to layer shift, then go completely mad. I made some errors, including switching the printer off and back on too quickly leaving the printer in a reboot cycle. Looking for a solution on the internet, I came across a post here which appeared to help, a reply someone had from SOVOL support which linked to a specific firmware (SOVOL SV07 PLus , Screen keeps rebooting) and it appeared to work because it stopped the reboots. I still had printing issues.
The firmware from the post had the following characteristics:
- Name: armbian-update
- Ver: (unknown)
- Date: 28 May 2024
- Size: 2.750Mb
- Owner: 528055394
I finally figured out my issues by reflashing the machine’s firmware using a download from SOVOL’s SV07 Firmware update page (an official update) which had the following characteristics:
- Name: armbian-update
- Ver: 1.0.8-07P
- Date: 5th October 2023
- Size: 48.729Mb
- Owner: sovol3d
That raises some questions, specifically the size difference … why is the non-official firmware update a mere twentieth of the size of the official one? I’d already wondered about the firmware I’d downloaded and, although retired now, I’ve spent thirty years in IT support; rightly or wrongly, I quickly imagined something nefarious.
So my question is can these firmware updates be different sizes (PC BIOS FW updates are the same size) and is it possible for someone to change them to do something bad?
Thanks
James
