Extruder stops working mid-print

Purchased a used (I know.. buyer beware) Sovol Zero. It would stop extruding 2-3 hours after a print was started, figured it was a extruder/hot end issue and was able to purchase a new assembly. Problem still occurs in the same time frame (2-3 hours into a print). Both the old and the new hot end work when printing calibration tests (all of them…) and I have printed a shorted job (under 2 hours). I have not been able to isolate the issue and was reaching out for ideas. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like heatcreep, but the new hotend would have fixed that.
What filament are you printing with..??
Do you print with the door open or the top removed..??

Been using PLA (currently loaded with Factory Filament Pro PLA+). Yes, door open and top off. With the new hot end, it is jamming in the PTFE tube between the extruder and hot end. I have been able to remove the hot end and open the extruder to clear the jams. I does not appear to be heat creep as it is not in the cool end of the hot end.

EDIT: Once I am able to remove the PTFE tube, it pushes through the extruder.

What errors show in Fluidd/Mainsail from your PC?

I will have to check but I don’t recall seeing any. Job reported finished this morning, but had stopped extruding mid-way.

EDIT: It also will not unload after, I imagine it is because the filament has been chewed up and can’t be retracted. I will verify once I get home tonight.

Does the jamed filament look to have been melted then pulled back into the PTFE tube??

Are you reusing the same g-code file? Verify your filament profile doesn’t have an unusually high retraction setting. Reslice and try again.

When I cleared it yesterday evening, there was no melting in the PTFE tube. I did not have time this morning to check (ugh, day job…). I re-slice after a fail and check the settings, I think Orca is using the Sovol PLA profile, but I will check and see what the retraction settings are.

Old hot end did not look worn (guy said he only used it for about 500 hours). New hot end also did not show signs of wear. I will take pics of both and post them.

Filament does not look like it was retracting too far. Orca has the retraction set to 0.8 mm.

Also looked at the logs, unfortunately the power fluctuated and the logs were wiped today. I will run a long print and see if an error occurs.

Well, started print last night. No errors in klipper,etc, but the the new print started under extruding and had an x-axis drift to the right within an hour of starting. Starting to wonder if there is a controller issue…

The only thing I can come up with that makes any sense is tangled filament on the spool.

This is probably unrelated to the under extrusion.

I can check the spool later. Just another symptom in the mix.

Changed to a roll of Overture PLA, so far no issues. Now to figure out why it is drifting to the right side of the bed…
