No problem this time, just wanted to share a mod success story.
The stock SV06 ACE PSU is a no-name brand with an always-on fan that makes the printer quite loud at idle. It’s not uncommon for me to be doing other things in the same room as the printer while it’s powered on but not printing, so I wanted to swap for a better PSU.
The Mean Well LRS-350-24 is a reliable cheap upgrade (I got mine for $28 on Amazon), with a temperature-controlled fan so the printer is completely silent at idle. It’s narrower than the stock one, but someone has already modeled a replacement that reuses the stock AC socket and mounting hardware.
I printed it out and installed the new PSU without issue, and I’m really happy with the result. (Obligatory disclaimer: This isn’t difficult to do, but does involve mains voltage connections, which can be dangerous if mishandled. Double check your wiring, and make sure the screw terminals on the PSU are tight before installing the shroud! And I just realized it’s hard to see in the wiring pic, but both ground wires are installed exactly as they were on the stock PSU.)
No criticism of your conversion! Just a thought from me. The Pro has a 500W power supply, so things are a bit different with the MeanWell power supply anyway. It’s just not as slim as the 350W power supply, and the Plus has the additional bracing on the frame anyway. But I wonder why Sovol doesn’t use the power supply to stiffen the frame. An additional mounting point on the power supply cover would further stiffen the frame.
Yes, I agree. For the non-Plus version, the stock PSU is 360W vs. the Meanwell at 350W. I don’t think the 10W will make a difference, and in any case, I trust the Meanwell’s OCP more than the no-name one.
For the Plus, it seems like a different story: 500W vs 350W is a big difference.
Do you know that the SV06+ (not ACE) has a 500W noname PSU but you can mount a 350W Meanwell PSU instead and it works?
For this printer, 500W is too much.
It’s not me saying that, but TH3D.
I only mentioned my SV06 Plus ACE with a 500W power supply because I no longer have the smaller SV06 ACE. It wasn’t about the 10W increase. I was talking about the idea of stiffening the frame with the power supply. Others have been doing this for a long time.
I was just planning on doing this! Will save me some time so thanks for the post. That’s great tool Holder I’m going to print that as well. What filament did you use? Looks spot on
I used Hatchbox “baby blue” PLA. It’s not a 100% match, but pretty close, and Sovol’s own blue PLA was out of stock at the time.
Here is is next to an “official” injection molded part. (Please ignore the ugly hull line and other horizontal artifacts on the Benchy… I think they’re a result of not having a consistent outer wall speed.)
