New to Sovol, Questions about the SV08

Hello! I am new to Sovol. Background… I got my first 3D printer in November ‘23. It’s a Bambu P1S. I love the machine, but I’m not happy with how Bambu is locking things down and I don’t trust them not to get even more restrictive in the future.

Fast forward to now, I’m looking to add a second printer, but don’t trust Bambu’s practices, so I’ve spent a lot of time researching a whole bunch of other manufacturers and I’m leaning toward Sovol specifically because they are open source. I realize that will mean more tinkering than with my P1S, but it also means more freedom. I would plan to start with the basic machine and get comfortable with it before I decide to do anything like adding a multi-color print system or even a tool changer system, both of which are super interesting to me.

That said, just a few basic questions about exactly what comes with the SV08 out of the box because the website is a little unclear.

  1. Does it come with the anti-tangle detection? Website just indicates “filament sensor”. Is that just a runout sensor?
  2. Is the “silent mainboard” listed in the Accessories section different than what the machine comes with? Curious if that’s just a replacement part or some kind of upgrade.
  3. Are the extruder gears hardened steel? Not a deal breaker, but I’d like to know what I’m dealing with.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Welcome to the Sovol community.

If you have any questions, you can wait for answers from other users or send an email to info@sovol3d.com.

Bye.

Welcome,

I don’t own a SV08 but I do read all the posts here and have assisted several owners to get their machines back to printing.

Sovol is actually semi open source. Firmware updates are not on Sovol’s Github for any of the klipper printers. No info at ALL about the SV08 Eddy upgrade has been released. The CAD models are incomplete. Etc.

The mainboard in the store is the same as the one in new printers.

The filament sensor is a simple switch and will not trigger if the filament stops moving.

I don’t believe the the extruder gears are hardened but, judging by the posts here, there are no chronic extruder problems.

Thanks for the help! Didn’t realize this forum is so much less active than the Bambu forums. Is there a better/more active forum to discuss these printers that you’re aware of?

Hello,

You can also use Sovol’s Facebook group or Discord.

But this forum is the official forum.

It’s normal for it to be less active than the Bambu forum, as it’s a smaller company with fewer users. But fewer users doesn’t mean less efficiency.

Cheers

The Sovol spec for the gears are 28-30Rc that is soft.

I had wiped out the stock set of the gears running petg-cf when the filament warped around the spool and ground the filament a few times, I did the Orbiter V2.5 upgrade kit using the harden gears (60Rc) on the stock extruder.
