I got my MAX in September 2025 and since day zero I had inconsistent first layers. Here is my topic from 2025 First layer cumulative X Y error (same pattern on first layer are common problem with MAX owners)
Since than I had days with perfect first layers and days with first layer peeling of or nozzle almost scratching the bed.
I modded my MAX really hard, even with some mods that were crafted entirely by me. Mods that include: custom enclosure, custom feeding system, macros, mainline klipper and new eddy probe.
Long story short the issue is SV08 MAX eddy probe.
This probe have no temperature sensor so no thermal drift calibration which seems to be huge issue with 500^3 build volume. I bought EddyDuo from BTT and created custom PA12 mount for it (with sacrifice of auxiliary fan). The USB cable for BTT eddy have just enough space to fit inside of toolhead.
IF YOU DECIDE TO USE THIS MOD YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO CHANGE CFG FILES!!!
for example you must change max X from 502 to 496
I used eddy (EddyDuo via USB)
I will contact SOVOL about this because, in my opinion, choice to use eddy with no temperature calibration was engineering mistake and people do notice. I saw posts about first layer issues all around the internet.
If someone want to use this mod here is step file (Print it in PA12, and you need 2 M3 inserts)
Thank you for putting the time and effort into looking into this! It’s a shame that Sovol probably flagged this as a fault and did nothing about it, which speaks to their poor decision making.
As you have mainlined your Max, have you installed Eddy NG and tested it with the Sovol Eddy before you switched to the BTT EddyDuo sensor?
3DPrintdemon the author of DKEU recommended mainlining the Max and switching to Eddy NG to improve first layers. Imo Eddy NG has a better algorithm for compensating temperature drift of the Eddy whether the stock Sovol Eddy or any 3rd party versions. It could be the improvements in your first layer is primarily from switching to Eddy NG and not from the EddyDuo.
The EddyDuo has both, USB and CanBUS. On the Max you need canBUS, right? So it is connected to the same port as the origin Eddy?
May I ask about the feeding system you use? Loosing the Sovol buffer when mainlining the Max is the main reason that held me back. Hoped the BQ Panda Feeder could be a replacement but after fiddling with it for 2 weeks I‘ve went back to the Sovol buffer. The Panda feeder just didn’t work reliably on the Max.
Appreciate you confronted Sovol with your results. They released an Eddy upgrade kit for the original SV08 a while back. Wonder whether it has the same Eddy probe without a temperature sensor?
An improved plug and play Eddy sensor from Sovol would be very welcome even if it wouldn’t be for free.
Also like to know a bit more about your enclosure. Looks pretty nice. Is it your own design? Reminds me of the enclosure from Nadir except the top hat.
I have the original Sovol enclosure on mine which is massive both physical and optical. I mainly print PETG for which I wouldn’t need an enclosure. But for the rare occasions when i need a large print in ABS or ASA it is nice to have the option.
Yes I tried use Eddy-ng with stock sovol eddy and I do not know what you mean better “thermal drift calibration algorithm”, because stock Sovol eddy does not have temp sensor so you cannot compensate for unknown coil temperature.
I used USB, it was easier, you can see on photo that I used same path as PTFE.
I just used SOVOL MAX Step files to create outline for my local plexi cutter. I have project but is total mess. I can give it to you but I’m guaranteeing 100% quality
