After having the Zero for a week, I have one gripe that I really hadn’t considered when I first got it. Black interiors are just not a good idea. It just makes it very hard to see things in there, especially bits of filament and such.
Fortunately, It should be fairly easy to partially fix. When I get the time, I’m going to completely remove the side panels and spray paint the inside surface in something neutral.
Not sure about doing the back. I don’t really want to disassemble it that far, nor do I trust myself to mask it adequately. I might look for something like a vinyl adhesive.
I like the look of the blacked out Sovol Zero but my old eyes need a lot of light, so my plan is a lot of LED light, per Martin’s post. I haven’t done that yet.
I was originally going to lighten the interior with light gray 3D printed PLA-LW insulating tiles on the inside of the printer to assist the passive heating but I realized that the passive chamber heating on the Zero is already excellent.
Here are some tips from someone who painted the inside of his Zero.
Your eyes must be bad… ![]()
No disassembly
No masking
No paint fumes
100% reversable if you don’t like
That video is definitely something that is influencing my desire to paint the interior. I have no intention of painting the outside, I like the black. But I’m thinking of painting the inside a light gray. I don’t want a harsh white.
The left side panel appears to be the easy one. There’s nothing attached to it. The right side is a bit more work, since the exhaust fan/filter assembly is attached to it. Still, looks easy enough. I can pull the back panel, and paint the upper part of it. But I think for the short-term, I’ll probably leave the rest of the inside back alone.
Just FYI, I got my Zero this week.
The spool holder is now side mount, with the fil sensor in front. Came with firmware 1.4.7.
Can you post a picture…
And now, I’m thinking… (sorry)
What if, instead of painting, I used heat-shield foil tape.
I doubt it would do a lot as far as improving heat retention in the chamber, but it definitely would fix the issue of it being too dark. ![]()
Added benefit of being easier to apply in places not easily unmounted.
Decent idea but I still think the magnet backed gloss white paper has a lot of advantages.
Contrariwise, I’m really not a fan of magnetic paper. I don’t need or want it to be that easily removable. And I don’t think I’d trust it not to come loose at the worst possible time.
