Actually, we had intended to gather some information here regarding the multi-material system. The rest of our feedback has surely reached Sovol by now—I am certain of that.

It’s certainly interesting. Of course, one could envision even more possibilities. Both print heads have access to the tool changers, meaning both can print in multiple colors… just a thought. The enclosure and the active chamber heater will likely be offered as optional extras again, which would raise the total price accordingly. It would be better if the filament rack were enclosed so it could keep the filament dry. It would be great to read about further options that could make the printer even more attractive. Unfortunately, Sovol and other manufacturers aren’t as proactive as Prusa when it comes to further developing models and offering later upgrades. As a result, printers from China become obsolete so quickly. I could easily have imagined this tool changer being offered as a retrofit for the SV08 as well.
Am I the only one that sees this much new tech from Sovol as a disaster waiting to happen?
This is the company shipping their flagship product with a shaft in the extruder that slips to one side and stops working. The design flaw is well documented for several years.
This is the company that ships their flagship model with the same PLR system that causes “timer too close” errors that shipped with the SV07. The fix is available and costs them $0.
Sovol started off as a “clone shop” copying Creality machines and undercutting them on price. Somehow they believe they can now be innovators and push new tech. Their “quick, cheap, dirty” mindset from the old days is incompatible with this goal.

I was hoping we could mix modes, like have one part of the build plate be mirror, while the other part be multi color mode… the way that page makes things sound it’s one mode at a time…
I will admit I’m new to 3D printing and multi head, color printing, is above my current knowledge.

You are right, It could be a repeat, but I hope that it is not. Personally I enjoy that bit of hands on I get from my Zero, and I do hope that with the higher price tag Sovol does apply tighter quality control for something that looks to be presented as a flag ship project device. Sovol has plenty to reference among the various customer channels on what to look for based on their current printer lines. Open source also something that could be improved, especially with current market trend and behavior from other companies.
IMHO, with the little we get from the landing page, it looks like they might be trying to address some of the eddy sensor and bed calibration issues based on the new “auto vision calibration” and “eddy sensor” features. Also, I have not had time to read enough about the SV04 IDEX to see if the M1D is even based on it or not. I came onboard with the Sovol Zero, and have enjoyed the experience I’ve had with it and the company.
So fingers crossed that Sovol does have a clearer vision for quality and promising goals for the M1D and it’s future community.

100% agree, was thinking about something similar, like they were going to offer a standardized kit to allow several printers to be retrofitted for multicolor, multitoothed etc.. The obsolete rate is a thing!

I too am a tinkerer and don’t mind having to do a little R&D to get the results I’m after.
But I grow tired of defending Sovol on the forums when new customers vent their flustration with issues that SHOULD have been avoided. Put a longer axle in the extruder or include the crowd sourced retainer? NOPE, ship the same broken shit.
And don’t get me started on the whole open source thing…
To be clear, I think the printer is interesting, and tool changers are an exciting topic right now. I’m still unsure about the IDEX setup, though—how often does it really get used? If the second head can’t access the tools, it’s basically limited to one color, and the difference between six or seven colors probably doesn’t matter much. Without IDEX, there could have been room for a seventh tool. If they compromised on the enclosure and heater to cut costs, I’d rather skip IDEX altogether. For the same price, an enclosed printer would offer more versatility. The real question is whether this is the final version or if a slightly stripped-down model might be coming. Six tools without IDEX would be just fine, too. As for Bambu Lab, I won’t get into it—Sovol’s recent statements already cover that. I may not be a fan of Bambu Lab, but that’s not my concern.
I owned Sovol’s first IDEX printer, the SV04. As it ran on Marlin, the copy mode halved the printing time. That was really interesting.
I then bought a Klipper printer and stopped using the SV04.
But that printer worked very well, even though it was more difficult to set up than current models.
I don’t deny the benefits of IDEX, but I rarely need to print a part twice or in a mirrored setup. I can see the challenges it brings—like compensating for bed unevenness in two spots at once, which isn’t easy, and making sure both printhead nozzles are perfectly level. In this case, that means six tools plus the second printhead, which is a lot of work. That’s why I’m questioning whether it’s worth it, or if the money might be better spent on an enclosure with a heated chamber.
Are you sure this printer doesn’t come with an enclosure with a heated chamber?
Do you see a chamber there? I don’t.
I don’t know, but until that model is available, anything goes.
The teaser also showed a door and a hood. Both are gone now. In my experience, if something isn’t visible, it isn’t part of the package. If Sovol changes that, I certainly won’t mind.
Be patient, we’ll probably know soon.
Curious why only one had has access to the changer? Does this limit travel to the one that does?
