In the immortal words of Gene Wilder “IT’S ALIVE”!!!
I replaced about 6 inches of the power and ground wires. Soldered not solder sleeves, I’m more comfortable with that. Used some of the old shield and replaced some with copper shielding tape I happen to have from another project. It’s in the middle of a very simple test print now and seems to be doing OK.
I did reinforce the area 20mm maybe a little more before and after the clamp with a double layer of heat shrink. When I did the QGL, home, bed mesh etc. the heat shrink did not seem to affect the ability of the toolhead to move to the extreme corners of the bed but it did reduce the angle of the harness bending quite a bit.
.
Hopefully I will get the replacement harness without too much delay.
Here is a short update on the status of my SV08 and its electrical problems.
As I wrote in another posting, I’ve managed to kluge together a repair to the original cable. In the drawing pdf files on the Sovol github and as posted by Cardoc, the part of the cable that failed is called the “Adapter Board data cable” but that is just part of the cable assembly in the machine. In another drawing file called the “Three-in-one data cable” it has the adapter board cable, the X/Y power cables and a USB type A Cable that plug into the MB and goes elsewhere in the machine.
The cable I received has the X/Y cables and the two connectors for power and data for the toolhead only. It does not even have the shield drain. I wonder what printer this cable actually belongs to.
Sorry about the ugly circles, they were done freehand as you can tell. The wires circled in red are what is missing.
It has a 3 pin connector, but at the toolhead end on the old harness, there are three wires even though the drawing shows only two. The old harness has white and green on the 1 and 3 pin with a very small AWG black wire in the middle pin position. The new harness has two white and green only. The top picture is the new harness. The bottom is the old as installed.
Even with that, the harness they sent me is missing other components. I’ve already sent them an email with the three in one data cable drawing attached with neater circles than I posted here.
I received an answer from Sovol stating, and I’ll quote here.
“Regarding your question, the wire resistance we resend you is a revised version. The marked part in the picture is missing, the camera cable is cancelled, and the thermistor wire is combined into one interface.”
I don’t quite understand the thermistor wire or marked part comment, but I’m assuming if I want the camera to function I’ll have to move the wire for it from the old assembly to the new or just run it parallel to the new harness.
I took the USB/camera cable out of the old harness and ran it parallel to the new harness up to the gantry. I’ve got the new harness installed, ran a few tests; home all, QGB, PID tune. I’m going to heat soak the bed then do a mesh. So far everything seems to be working OK.
New cable is just a bit longer than the old one, not as thick, no shield drain, but it has about 3-4 inches of heatshrink where it goes through the clamp at the tool head maybe it’s stiffer.
