My original probe literally fell apart (I have no idea why) and my replacement may not be working. My intention is to go to mainline Klipper but I need to print some things before committing to that. I looked up the paper leveling method for Klipper (and I am used to it with my SV07) but what do I need to do to tell the SV08 with Sovol’s Klipper to ignore the probe and let me do everything manually? I haven’t given up on the current probe but since I will probably go the Eddy route with mainline I don’t want to spend money on a new one.

Never tried it but if you put a # in front of all these lines in printer.cfg:

Klipper can no longer access the probe

Which will error on any attempt to home the Z axis.

Home XY then go to the console and send SET\_KINEMATIC\_POSITION SET\_HOMED=Z
Then move Z to where you want to call 0 and send SET\_KINEMATIC\_POSITION SET\_HOMED=Z

Make sure your gcode doesn’t try and home (either all or Z), quad level or run a mesh

Might work… might still error

10 to one you’ll still get errors

good luck

I don’t think there is any slicer that allows you to do relative moves only for the Z axis. I could be wrong though. I don’t see any options in Orca.

Don’t need the slicer until after you get the gantry set to where you want to set the final Z=0

Start gcode almost has G28 in it which is “home all” . G28XY is useable without the probe.

As far as relative moves Use the buttons in the web UI. Klipper won’t accept a move that goes negative except for “baby steps”. You might need to pull the filament and start a print (any print that doesn’t have a G28 You can edit gcode files in fluid or mainsail) and babystep as far down as it will let you. Cancel print and send SET\_KINEMATIC\_POSITION SET\_HOMED=Z. Restart the print and babystep some more. If your gantry is very high it may take several times through the procedure.

Every time you send SET\_KINEMATIC\_POSITION SET\_HOMED=Z klipper forgets where is is and assigns the current height to 0.

There is a [FORCE\_MOVE](https://www.klipper3d.org/G-Codes.html?h=forc#force_move_1) command but I’ve never played with it. I think it would allow you to input negative values for Z

Alternative: Power off and turn the lead screws by hand but you would have to do a power off paper test at all 4 corners to have any hope of getting a first layer to stick

Thanks for the replies! I played around with the printer last night and I think the problem is almost certainly with the new probe and I decided that $25 for a new one is worth it to get me through if it’s true that Sovol is adding Eddy support to SV08’s. For any new owners, the stock probe can easily work its way loose and cause havoc (this is what led mine to breaking apart and tearing up the wiring). It is also very easy to overtighten the retaining screw, which is what caused the very faint but apparently lethal crunching noise in my replacement probe (which was working perfectly until that moment). My advice is to get some liquid threadlocker (blue, since you may want to remove the screw later without damaging anything) and let it hold the screw in place so that you don’t overtighten it. Be careful not to get the liquid inside the plastic shell of the probe (I would put a small dab in the threaded insert and not on the screw itself). In fact, I recommend doing that for just about every screwed on part. It’s worth the effort to prevent parts working loose.
