I’m fiddling around with the zero, but I must say I find the speed underwhelming.

Whenever I slice a benchy with default PETG profiles and 10% infill for the Zero it will take roughly 45 minutes, on it’s bigger brother the sv08 it will take approximately 30 minutes.

That’s not what I expected

I can crank up the speed to 300% and it will still print fine, but the total print time is still nowhere near the speed I expected from the headlines in the ad.

Are there updated profiles anywhere or is this just a case of endless fiddling around trying to get the max speed ?

If I remember right, the pre-sliced Benchy on the USB printed at 8:45 min.
The stock profiles for the Zero have a more reasonable speed, a little faster then the A1 Mini.

If you didn’t get any files on the USB, you can find them here.

**EDIT:** I edited my post to post the real Benchy speed at 8:45 min.

There was no benchy on the usb, but I found a gcode version that some engineer at sovol apparently sliced with insane settings, it printed in 8 minutes but was far from perfect.

I just find it strange that the default profiles are worse speed wise than the sv08

I am also surprised that the Zero would be slower than the SV08 (although the SV08 Max is the closer comparison architecturally).

Could you post or link their 8:45 speed benchy? Then I can compare those insane settings to the stock profile, maybe split the difference between them to create a faster profile that isn’t so “far from perfect”

OK, here are the differences between stock and speedBenchy. I also made an intermediate column that splits the difference.

Not sure when I’ll get around to turning this into some new profiles, but I’ll post them here if somebody doesn’t beat me to it!

I made some profiles according to these settings and the print speed did indeed improve.. but the quality was dramatic

So I guess the advertised print speeds were just theoretical

nevertheless still a nicely built and functioning printer for this money, a big bang for the buck

Nice! An export of your profile, and perhaps some photos of the quality issues you’re observing, would be greatly appreciated.

My impression is that the bigger brand put in the labor into making well-tuned profiles, so even 6+ months after release the Zero is still at a bit of a disadvantage.

This is entirely true. I’ve seen reports that Big B had 100 mules running 24/7 for 6 months prior to their last product release. You can spend $2M on R&D when you expect to move 500K units.

Sovol can’t when they expect to move 10K units. Sovol does minimal R&D but that is carried through to a lower price point.

Big B also LOCKS their system and does everything they can to lock you into their consumables. With a huge margin on filament they can also justify more R&D dollars. As a hobbyist I prefer to support the small guy with the EXPECTATION I’m gonna have to tweak and tune.

The filament AND printer of the speedbenchy are modified… NOT just the process profile. The speedbenchy uses a specific filament profile that has much higher maximum volumetric flow rate.

To get anything near the speedbenchy, you have to be doing a maximum of about 50 mm^3/s flow (the bottom-most setting)

Printer / Extruder 1 has 0.35 retraction and NO z-hop

filament:

After slicing, the maximum speed of any part of the 8:45 benchy is 403mm/s and the maximum flow is 50.49 mm^3/s

The \*\*Sovol Zero\*\*'s speedbenchy numbers aren’t practical defaults. Benchy employs a unique filament profile with a significantly greater volumetric flow. stock hotend tops out around ~50 mm³/s, so after you achieve that, increased speeds in the slicer don’t matter.

no z-hop + brief retraction is correct, accel and flow are the true constraints. tune melt capacity first, not XY speed. speedbenchy is a demo, not what the printer does out of the box.

i wanted to finish a roll of cheap PETG and played around a bit just for shits and giggles and in the end had good looking benchy in 10:39 … no 8:xx but we’re talking PETG here and you could still go more insane … these were settings still i felt very confortable with .. but the roll was finally empty ^^
